The New Voices Team
I am Elizabeth Halim, District Governor 307B1 Indonesia.
I am proud to call myself a Woman Lion and a Lion Leader.
Let me bring you back in time when a close friend of mine invited me to join Lions Club. It’s true when they say time flies when you are having fun – believe it or not, I have since been serving as a Lion member for 30 years now.
I was a young mother, only in my twenties, trying to manage my time, juggling between work and taking care of my little kids. But even then, I managed to spend a few hours for Lions meetings every week. I find joy in serving others, and there was always fun to be had when meeting and getting to know new friends. We shared a lot with each other, and we learned so many new things along the way. But, most importantly, joining Lions Club has not only given me the opportunity to do more humanitarian services, but have also helped me developed my leadership skills and strive to be a better woman.
I find great joy in serving lonely and sick seniors who need someone to care and spend time talking to them. I feel accomplished after helping those with vision problems, giving them the chance to see the beauty of the world. I cannot explain this amazing feeling of satisfaction when lives have been saved or have been changed for the better. I feel my heart grow full and my life feel meaningful when I see the smiles on the faces of the people that we have helped throughout this journey.
My most memorable experience is when we educate individuals in need while serving to protect our environment. In Indonesia, education is so out of reach that there are many young adults without the skills to find jobs. We decided to teach these underprivileged women how to look for opportunities, create something unique and make a living for themselves, so they may live as independent women. Some of these skills are gathering waste, selecting sustainable materials, and recycling them to create beautiful and durable products such as handbags and pouches to sell.
Joining a club means we are not alone. We are always working together, and there are more ideas and effort together in a group, therefore the impact is always stronger and better.
I am proud of what I have accomplished. I hope to inspire more women, especially the younger generation, to join our Lions Club family, and to become involved and eventually become the women leaders of their own community.
I believe not only men can do big things, but us women. We can do so much with our intuition and emotional connection. Us strong, independent women understand and value our natural gifts of sensitivity, passion, and love, and put them to good use.
We will serve hand-in-hand supporting this New Voices initiative, celebrating that female lions and male lions are equal in leadership positions.
